Kanzashi are traditional Japanese hair accessories for women, used as ornaments in hair arrangements. Many different styles and designs of kanzashi were created during the late Edo period to adorn women's hair. They were made using a wide variety of materials, including lacquer-coated wood, gold or silver plated metal (brass is commonly used today for its strength), tortoiseshell, ivory, or silk. More recently, different types of plastic have been used as well. Materials such as coral, agate, jade, and crystal have been used to create the decorative embellishments. There is even a rare kanzashi made with crane bone for good luck.
